The West Australian coastline is home to many shipwrecks. Some deliberately sunk to accommodate the growing activity of wreck diving, examples of these are the HMAS Perth located in Albany and The HMAS Swan which can be found just off the shores of beautiful Dunsborough.
HMAS Swan (Dunsborough, Western Australia) The HMAS Swan, a 120 metre long decommissioned naval destroyer was sunk off Meelup Beach, Dunsborough in 1997. Protected in a blue water bay, the Swan is always a great diving experience. With good visibility, plenty of interesting marine life, and temperate waters, this artificial reef is simply stunning. With an average depth of 31 metres, a myriad of swim throughs and interesting crevasses to explore (both out and inside this beautiful wreck) one dive is never enough! HMAS PERTH (Albany, Western Australia) Scuttled in the clear waters of King George Sound, Albany November 2001, the decommissioned Perth is now an established artificial reef home to an array of marine life. This 133-metre long guided missile destroyer with a distinguished service record, is a pleasure to dive with an average depth of 35 metres. Having served in the Vietnam war, she came under fire on four occasions, and remnants of shellfire will be visible to divers on the interpretive dive trail. |
